What would be the smallest diameter opening would you recommend using this on ?

The resin cones work best if you can move up and down the cone to prevent cutting a "channel" into the resin. If your opening is too small you won't be able to move up and down the cone enough to prevent this from happening. I would recommend nothing smaller than 1-1/2 inch.
