Setting Up a Covington Flat Lap Grinder

Getting to Know Your Flat Lap Grinder

Lap grinders are some of the most useful coldworking tools available, but they can be confusing to set up and get prepped for using your diamond disks for grinding. We'll help you set up your lap grinder quickly and easily.

While the video above covers the smaller 12-inch floor standing grinder, the concepts will apply to the larger 18-inch and 24-inch grinders as well.

Stand and Deliver

The smaller 12-inch Covington lap grinder will sit lower on the floor as it is built for coldworking while seated.

If you need to raise the grinder, you can use the optional stand to raise the grinder up to a better level for standing and grinding. It still maintains a decent height for grinding while seated as well.

The larger Covington grinders are built for standing up while grinding, so no additional stand is required.

Accessorize!

Ensuring all your parts and pieces are accounted for is very important for water hookups, as is the ability to switch out center plugs for items like the CBA adaptor that allows the use of cones and domes in the center of your grinder.

Your grinder will come with a solid center plug and a center plug with a hole for the center water feed, along with a spanner wrench for removing these center plugs. If you want to use grinding tools like the cones or domes in the center of your grinder, you'll need the 5/8-11 male-to-male adaptor for your center plug.

Hook Me Up

Water is vital for running the Covington grinder, so hooking up your water source is the most critical aspect of setting up your grinder.

The simple push-to-connect adaptor on the water manifold of the grinder makes it simple to use either a submersible pump system or a direct water line with a hose pipe or spigot.
