Is it possible to mask a surface and submerge in varietch?

Yes, masking off a piece of glass and then dipping into the acid bath is the best way to etch the surface. Just make sure that as you lower it into the bath that no bubbles are captured in the stencil. This would cause the acid to be blocked from where the bubbles are.
