Setting Up a Covington Maxi-Lap Grinder

The Covington Maxi-Lap grinder is the perfect lap grinder for both portability and versatility in your grinding process.

Available as either an 8-inch or 10-inch grinding head, the base unit can be used with either size wheel head, so switching to a larger wheel head as your work size increases is incredibly easy. The grinder is a fixed-speed grinder but is a belt-driven system, so it has high torque for working pieces that require more pressure on the grinder without fear of slowing down the lap wheel as you work.

The removable wheel head makes it simple to attach a diamond cone or dome to the center shaft to turn your lap grinder from a flat lap to a perfect interior beveller. 

Its small size and lightweight construction make it the perfect grinder to take on the road or set up at a local art fair. 

What Disks Work with the Maxi-Lap?

The Maxi-Lap grinder is available in both 8-inch and 10-inch diameters. It can use any of our electroplated diamond disks for shaping and removal or our resin diamond disks for pre-polish.

The Maxi-Lap has no center post, so you don't need a center hole in your disks for the grinder. Be aware that our electroplated diamond disks will always have a small 1/4-inch center hole, our electrical contact point for the plating process. Our resin diamond pads will always have a solid surface.

Our Maxi-Lap grinders come with steel-topped wheel heads, so you can use our magnetic-backed diamond disks to quickly and easily change grits on the Maxi-Lap.

What About Cones and Domes?

The Maxi-Lap is highly versatile because it can work with our magnet-backed diamond disk and our electroplated and resin diamond cones and domes.

Remove the existing wheel head from the shaft of the grinder, add the Maxi-Lap spacer to the shaft to give the cone or dome a flat spot to rest on, and then thread your 1/2-20 cone or dome onto the Maxi-Lap shaft to work the interior angles on your work.
